More weirdness out of the Hiarcs 8 book! I don't find 4...Qc7 in any standard
references (NCO, ECO, etc.), but it does get played once in a long while,
usually just transposing to known lines after 5.Nc3. Actually, the whole game up
to move 10 was seen before (Minic - Mikhalchishin, 1962), and looks no worse for
Black than some other dicey Sicilian lines.
But why saddle the program with a position where it immediately believes itself
about a pawn worse, when there must be many alternatives more in tune with the
program's style? And why include 4...Qc7 at all, if the program is to be dumped
out of book at move 5 by a known reply? Shouldn't the idea of a trick line like
this be to save time for Hiarcs while the opponent, possibly out of book, is
forced to use up precious minutes early in the opening?
This book might cost Hiarcs 50 or more Elo points on lists like the SSDF's --
looking at the game, it made a strong comeback, and it is easy to imagine it
might have won from a better starting point.
