The reason that I started into computer chess, and I suspect the reasons for other people as well, is that I was interested in chess, and I enjoyed programming, and I realized that I would never be a great chess player myself, so I figured that I would enter the computer chess world and dominate that less popular field. Of course, I completely underestimated everyone else and overestimated myself. I think the comedian Jerry Seinfeld said it best when he said that all guys think of themselves as low level super heroes in their own environment. It's really true. I mean no matter how long I play chess at a beginner to novice level, I still believe that someday I will be playing against the best in the world. When you watch sports you still think about what it will be like when you get to play professionally. And in computer chess, no matter how long our program plays a relatively weak game against the top programs, we still think that someday our program will be the best if we just work a little harder. So basically I'm interested in computer chess because it's my way of keeping the dream alive :-) Russell
