I don't think it's such a "wow" situation. He is apparently one of the most talented shogi players in the entire world. In other words, he's a genius to start with. I bet if Kasparov or Kramnik, or any of the world's top 10 chess players, took up another game they could reach lower master level, although I have a feeling they would be disappointed with "lower master level" when they're used to being one of the world's best.
