AFAIK there was no need for a Fritz 6 (NoMMX), because F6 and earlier versions didn't use MMX technology anyway. In other words, it didn't matter if the computer supported that or not. AFAIK Deep Fritz (6) was the first Fritz which utilized MMX CPU registers. Here in CCC, Frans Morsch was quoted saying that Fritz 7 uses those registers for bitboard operations. Fritz 7 (NoMMX) ensures that users of old "No MMX"-CPUs have a strong engine available with the Fritz 7 software, too. I would prefer to be able to use the NoMMX engine, without hacks, in the Fritz 7 GUI (too) also on MMX CPUs... but in this case, users of newer CPUs would get 2 Fritz engines, while users of very old CPUs get only one engine and might complain. But I don't know if that idea was the reason. I can use both, because I've kept the Hiarcs 7.32 GUI as an alternative. :o) Regards, M.Scheidl
