I don't want to barge into a discussion I'm unfamiliar with, but did you read
the node speed from the counter or did you check it with the analysis line also?
I have a PIII@750MHz and get a node speed in the follwoing middle game position
of about 95-100

Fritz 5.32 - Dorp,van,J
2r5/5pk1/pBb3pp/2P5/3RrPP1/7P/P4K2/3R4 w - - 0 1

Analysis by Hiarcs 8:

<snipped some lines>

  ± (1.15) Depth: 8/8 00:00:00 1kN
33.Rxe4 Bxe4
  ± (1.15) Depth: 8/8 00:00:00 1kN

  ± (1.15) Depth: 8/8 00:00:00 1kN

  ± (1.15) Depth: 8/8 00:00:00 1kN
33.Rxe4 Bxe4 34.Rd7 Bc6 35.Rd6 Bb7 36.a4 a5 37.Bxa5
  ± (1.10) Depth: 9/25 00:00:07 778kN
33.Rxe4 Bxe4 34.Rd7 Bc6 35.Rd6 Bb5 36.h4 a5 37.Rd4 Rc6 38.a4 Ba6
  ± (1.11) Depth: 10/27 00:00:18 1766kN
33.Rxe4 Bxe4 34.a3 Bc6 35.Rd6 Bb5 36.Rd4 Bc6 37.Rd6
  ± (1.09) Depth: 11/30 00:01:25 8343kN

In 7 seconds it's 778 kN/s, so 111 kN/s
In 18 seconds it's 1766 so 98.1 kN/s
In 85 seconds it's 8343kN so 99.3 kN/s

etc.

I could imagine that the counter in the engine pane is not working properly.

Just a thought.

J.
