i don't know too much about chess programs, but i can answer for my checkers
program: i do very much forward pruning, and it gives me HUGE gains. then again,
checkers is a much more positional game than chess, so it is much easier to do
forward pruning. but my experience with it makes me think that if someone could
find a decent way to do it in chess, it would make a very big difference.
perhaps this is what separates the top commercials from the top amateur
programs...
