I concur with your advice. The disadvantage of it is that the learning
curve is steep and you need to invest time to get familiar with it.

For me, vi (and sometimes ctags and cscope) running under a text console
is an ideal development evironment. I takes time to learn the editor
and it is certainly not user friendly...at first. Once you get the hang
of it, works goes like a breeze no matter what hardware you are running
on. The virtual consoles allow for quick 'switching' between tasks.

For browsing/xboard use, I use WindowMaker. Mozilla is a good
browser but it _is_ slow on slow hardware. It was not usable on my
Cyrix120. Netscape 4.x is faster but outdated. There are some replacement
browsers, but neither is great if you cannot use Mozilla. I am happy that
my Athlon now runs Mozilla quickly.

I spent a day half a year ago to learn Perl. I did not know any scripting
language before that, and it was time well spent. I can now quickly automate
every programming and testing task.

The combination of the above programs takes little diskspace (I think
<500M including all development stuff and headers), and is a breeze to
work with for an advanced user.

But I would not recommend it for the average user.

If you change to Linux, you will need time to learn to work with it,
and that will be true for other persons too. Linux is not a drop-in
replacement for Windows - it is a totally different OS.
