Subject: A Program-generated opening book...

Hi,

I am running a (not very serious) test as follows:

- Conditions

Pentium III 866, F7 GUI, Gauntlet tournament where Hiarcs 8 is playing against
other top programs. Initially H8 got an opening book named Empty.ctg and played
100% on its own. Opponents have received different opening books.

Hash tables: 32 MB for Hiarcs and 4 MB for opponents. This is due to fact that
the tournament runs on the same PC I use for work.

Time settings: 10/5 minutes, 20/1 minute and the rest in 1 minute, ponder on,
booklearning on.

After a set of games the first 10 moves of each game are added to Hiarcs opening
book - Empty.ctg.

Observations: Ponder ON mode allows Hiarcs to have some compensation for the
time, which is lost at opening.

Although this book is only 50% Hiarcs-generated, it still contains a lot of
lines, which are not included in opponents' books. This will result in advantage
for Harcs the next time the line is played.

The second set of 60 games are in progress right now.

Any comments & sugestions?
