Yes, this can happen under Winboard, although I have routinely run long
auto-matches of hundreds of games and have only recently seen a single instance
of this problem.

I have found many programs with sporadic bad behavior under Winboard. Phalanx,
Yace, Gromit, and Crafty are the ones I have found to be the most stable.
