Mine hasn't: C:\WINDOWS>grep Befehl oder Dateiname nicht gefunden. Atari ST (1986) had allready grep (from the >FSS, who may be of more fame with gcc here). The first tcc (Turbo C Compiler? - >late 80ies) I used, already shipped together with grep. From earlier computers i >used, I actually cannot remember grep like tools. To use a Windows grep for example you have to download it on some tool site I assume - average ordinary user won't do that. Windows probably really is a little easier to use than Linux but not much. Windows isn't that easy to use either - the average user just got used to it, which was my main point. Everything you know a little is easy. Recently there was a nice thread here discussing how to install a book update for Hiarcs 8 that was offered for download at ChessBase. You had to do two things after download: a.)Create a new opening tree ( there is a menu entry for that) b.)Import old book and choose the downloaded file when unzipped ( another menu entry) Really a piece of cake. But I remember at least two people who failed because when you create a new opening tree you have to type a name in the textbox for it. If you don't know that it isn't trivial to find out .. Another example: I wasn't able to deinstall an application on my Palm because I couldn't think of the right place to look for this option - it _was_ easy, when I knew. For me it is always a good lesson to watch my father working with his computer - he does many things in a way I wouldn't think plausible until I think about it again and understand why he does it like this. OK, just one more ;-): Often on this board I have read something like this : I installed the update for chessprogram x , it didn't work anymore. So I deinstalled the program and installed it again - still didn't work. Then I downloaded the update again. Then I decided to reinstall Windows (!! - at least 10 messages I have read who had that one). Is this easy or logical? No, it is some workaround guided by user experience ( once it worked when I did this ..) Enough offtopic :) PeTer
