First, you must decide on a programming language. Then you must learn that programming language and learn it well. Expect this step to take about 2 years, bare minimum. Then you must learn fundamental algorithms. You will want to be able to order things and reate lists, etc. Then you must learn the special chess searching algorithms. (Actually, they apply to other games as well like Go and Othello) Then you must learn to write an evaluation function. This is where your chess knowledge will come into play. You can extracxt most of what you need from books, or from good chess players. Expect the whole project to take quite a while. Personally, I had 20 years of programming experience before I started and also a computer science related degree (Numerical Analysis). I have spent 7 years studying other chess programs, chess program papers, etc. I don't have anything I feel is worth releasing yet. Quite likely, you can come up with something faster than I have.
