I assumed you meant that in an if-statement, the contents of the expressing being evaluated could be anything, and therefore the shift/AND sequence is more "stable" and "reliable" than the add/if-test sequence. That's what I thought you meant. If so, that would qualify as an advantage to th e shift/AND method, but as far as I can tell, you're just accomplishing the ray tracing by a different method (IE doing a shift/AND instead of an add/if-test). So using bitboards for things like attacks and mobility isn't "free". Russell
