I think the key element that I am missing is rotated bitboards. For example, to compute the rank state for rook attacks, you only need to do a single shift operation and one AND operation, and you have the rank state, correct? If so, I think this is where I have been confused. I'm going to play around with the idea for a bit and see if it all makes sense to me now. Russell
