Tiger Roars – Wins 3rd Straight!
Tiger is leading the match for the first time 3-2.
The sixth game of the Frank J. Byrne Memorial Computer Chess Challenge pitting
the world's best freely available commercial computer chess program – Chess
Tiger v14 by Christophe Theron against the world's best freely available
non-commercial computer chess program - Crafty v18.15 by Robert Hyatt, was won
by Tiger, winning it’s third game in a row to take the lead in the match for the
first time. Tiger is leading 3-2.
Tiger took the advantage early with the black pieces by deploying the
Nimzo-Indian defense. A crucial weakening move was forced by Tiger with 19…
Bh3, forcing Crafty to weaken his kingside with g3. Tiger picked up momentum
with a strong kingside attack to which there appeared to be no good defensive
moves for Crafty. This game was the shortest of the match , only lasting 37
moves.
Crafty had stunned Tiger by winning the first two games of the match. The third
game was played to the match’s only drawn game.
Like the days of yore, it is the first program to win 10 games and the program
must have a margin of victory of 2 games. A winning score could be 10-8 or
21-19 it all depends on how the games go. Draws do not count - it just wins
that count.
The match is being held just outside of Philadelphia. Game 7 is underway.
