Subject: Frank J. Byrne Memorial Computer Chess Challenge - Game7 - Final

Author: Mike Byrne

7Th Game Ends in a Draw!

Tiger is leading the match 3-2.

The seventh game of the Frank J. Byrne Memorial Computer Chess Challenge pitting
the world's best freely available commercial computer chess program – Chess
Tiger v14 by Christophe Theron against the world's best freely available
non-commercial computer chess program - Crafty v18.15 by Robert Hyatt, ended in
a draw today. It is the second draw of the match.. The third game also ended
in a draw.

Summary:
Tiger v14.0 CP 0 0 .5 1 1 1 .5 =4
Crafty 18.15 1 1 .5 0 0 0 .5 =3

For the first time , a Sicilian defence was played. The Pelikan (aka
Chelyabinsk) variation has a devoted following among chess players. Tiger was
able to finally win a pawn on 42. Nxe5, but Crafty played a tenacious defense
throughout the game and preserved the draw. Early on Crafty had an potentially
powerful outside pawn passer but was never able to capitalize on it. Equality
was achieved by Crafty with a series of moves commencing with 51. Rxa3, which
eliminated Tiger’s last remaining pawn passer at c4.

Crafty stunned Tiger by winning the first two games of the match. Since then,
Tiger has roared back by winning game 4, 5, and 6 to take the lead 3-2.

Like the days of yore, it is the first program to win 10 games and the program
must have a margin of victory of 2 games. A winning score could be 10-8 or
21-19 it all depends on how the games go. Draws do not count - it just wins
that count.

The match is being held just outside of Philadelphia. Game 8 is underway.
