Tiger Roars Again – Beats Crafty!

Tiger leads match 4-3.

The ninth game of the Frank J. Byrne Memorial Computer Chess Challenge pitting
the world's best freely available commercial computer chess program - Chess
Tiger v14 by Christophe Theron against the world's best freely available
non-commercial computer chess program - Crafty v18.15 by Robert Hyatt, was won
by Tiger. It was Tiger’s fourth win of the match and it comes on the heals of a
Crafty victory in game 8.

Match Summary:
Tiger v14.0 CP 0 0 .5 1 1 1 .5 0 1 = 5
Crafty 18.15 1 1 .5 0 0 0 .5 1 0 = 4

The opening was the time honored Sicilian - Dragon variation. Tiger came out of
this sharp opening very well. After 23… Nd2+, this amateur was puzzled by the
evaluations that both sides were showing.  The answer became clear in few moves;
however, as Tiger was trapping the lonely knight. The knight eventually fell on
the sword for a lowly pawn (33.Nxb3+) unable to escape safely. Tiger’s position
overwhelmed Crafty with the piece advantage as it methodically cranked out the
win.

Crafty has won games 1, 2 and 8 of the match. Tiger has roared to victories
in games 4, 5, 6 and this game which is the ninth. Tiger now leads Crafty 4-3
in wins. Games 3 and 7 ended in a draw.

Like the days of yore, it is the first program to win 10 games and the program
must have a margin of victory of 2 games. A winning score could be 10-8 or
21-19 it all depends on how the games go. Draws do not count - it just wins
that count.

The match is being held just outside of Philadelphia. Game 10 is underway.
Next update will note be until tommorrow night. There may be sevaral games to
report if things go well.
