________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Thanks, Ricardo, for the references. I read them. My first impression is that there is a lot of room for improvement in this area. Secondly, it appears that I worded my question poorly. What I was really interested in are the more recent cases of "context dependent forward pruning." My interest is stimulated by reports that position evaluation has become much more sophisticated. The decisions [automated] as to which branch to prune and which to not prune would, it seems, also have become much more sophisticated too. I was looking for a better understanding these recent advancements. Of especial interest to me is whether or not all pruning decisions are being made initially, immediately after the previous move was made and resulting position evaluated, or whether some of the decisions as to what to prune are delayed until later in the pruning process [after some but not all of the alpha/beta search is accomplished], but prior to the computer making the next move. In that case, I assume that there would have to be additional position evaluations, where the position to be evaluated were not of the position which occurred after the last move, but rather of positions occurring after some search had already been performed. [I'm not sure I'm communicating very well here. Sorry.] In the interval beginning when the last move was made and the time when the next move is made, how many positions are evaluated in this particular type of forward pruning process? One? More than one? If the answer is more than one, then is any of the resulting position information stored and used later AFTER the next move is made? Perhaps the answers would depend on the choice of engine?
