An antenna radiates a "shape" that looks like a sphere that is squashed on the top and bottom. Most of the energy radiates perpendicular to the antenna. IE the antenna goes thru the squished sphere and connects the two "squished points". No matter how you hold the phone, the main direction of radiation is going right thru your head... Whether it is bad or not is open for conjecture. It obviously has _some_ sort of affect. We can cook with microwaves. And 2.4ghz phones are _definitely_ making microwaves.
