Hi !

There are some discussions here about the game Pharaon vs. Tiger in round 5 of
Massy, and I would like to clarify some points:

=> First, I am very impressed by the performance of Tiger :
although playing with much slower hardware, it outplayed most of its opponent
(including Pharaon & Chinito), clearly showing that it was a clear step ahead in
Massy (apart from Chess Wizard, who suffered from its opening book in its game
with Tiger).

=> About the Tiger operator: Ernest has done its job professionally and
conscientiously: using a headphone to play the Tiger moves as fast as possible.

=> In all games played in Massy, I gave Pharaon 24’ for the all game (out of the
30’ Time Control) : it makes it play slightly faster, very slightly weaker, but
above all it prevents it from losing because of operator slowness!)
(it already happened in the past).

=> In the Pharaon – Tiger game, Tiger made pressure on Pharaon in most of the
opening and middle game, then in moves 60/90, the position became more balanced,
with winning chances for both sides. It was few minutes before Tiger lost on
time in a winning position.

=> My impression after the game is that the Tiger operator time was not suited
for such a long game (independently of the skill of the operator), and I agree
that the game was decided by the clock and not by the board.

=> Incidentally, the same thing occurred in round 3 between Pharaon and BBChess,
Pharaon was a pawn up in a very drawish rook endgame, and, instead of winning
the game on time, I preferred, with my opponent agreement, to finish the game
without the clock, to make sure that there was no hidden winning lines
(the game ended in a draw after 106 moves)
The difference between round 3 and round 5 is that the round 5 result decided of
the future tournament winner (a race between Tiger and Chinito), and Eugenio
would have killed me if I have offered to play without the clock :-) (meaning
giving a full point to Tiger, and the Massy tournament victory)

=> Uri : I also support the Fischer Time control, and not only for computer
games ;-)

Regards.
