stands for "Parallel Virtual Machine"...  it is a software package/library
that you can use to spawn processes on remote machines, as well as send
messages between these processes.  Developed at Oak Ridge Lab, it is similar
to another common package "DCE" which is "Distributed Computing Environment."

mostly just a huge library of procedure calls to handle message-passing in a
architecturally neutral sort of way...
