Saitek offers more products including the Mephisto brand. Novag offers the strongest portable dedicated computer in the world and has always been an important player. There is also Excalibur (http://www.excaliburelectronics.com/electronicchess.html) , but I have on idea on their products. >i am a new beginner, and my 2nd question is , is the coach-system for beginner >useful? i ask this because i don't want to buy a beginner type chesscomputer I do not know, but I assume that it will only point obvious mistakes. Mephisto had a computer that supposedly helped beginners, but it is out of production. >thanks for answering my question, and my budget is around $150USD I would advice Kasparov Cosmos ( a Saitek brand) http://www.saitek.com/chess/uk/consur.htm . It cost around 100-150 USD, and it is the strongest portable for that price range. Cougar is the desktop model and costs a little bit extra. Their engine is GK-2100 and is rated 1878 at the latest SSDF. If you want to be on the safe side, and spend less then Mephisto Miami for around 50 USD is your best choice. It has a strong engine (GK-2000 rated at 1797 SSDF), and again portable. Desktop model is Montana. Some sell it for around 100 USD, so you should search the web for that price. IIRC Niggemann sells for that price. If you have a Palm, do not even bother to buy these and buy Chess Tiger or Chess Tiger for around 25 USD. At worst case they would still be stronger than the two above. If you cannot wait for the new Palms which will offer more speed and hence strength to chess programs, then just buy a basic Palm and one of the two above programs (it will still cost less than 150 USD). You will definetly get more value for your money. Saitek: http://www.saitek.com/chess/uk/asia.htm Novag: http://www.novag.com/English/
