Subject: Is less RAM ok when using Windows XP?

In choosing a new notebook, many offer only 256MB of RAM, which has
traditionally been inadequate for newer applications.  However, XP
has removed the memory leaks that plagued earlier OS's, so will
less RAM serve most purposes, running under XP?
