The ratings can still be used to accurately predict outcomes on a probability basis (which is what the ratings are for). Not single outcomes [of course] but I had to toss that in there or someone would make it a rebuttal. There is a point that 1000 ELO difference will have a large amount of uncertainty. However, how often do 1000 ELO differences actually meet under tournament conditions? Basically never, so it is not a problem to worry about. Really, it is more of an "angels dancing on the heads of pins" thingy.
