In other words, >only having to deal with moving one piece from one square to another. simple logic says that it is not going to change the speed significantly. in most positions the program has no problem to see that castling,en passent and promotions are illegal but it does not make it faster in nodes per second. The check that it is illegal is very simple and does not take a lot of time even relative to other things in the move generator. I guess that program may be less than 1% faster without the special cases that you mention. Uri
