The problem is the conversion from/to MMX registers, which is unavoidable
because several instructions are not available for MMX registers such as the
bsf... and MMX instructions take usualy more cycles (at least on the processors
I use). Therefor a 2x speedup would only be realistic for true 64bit machines.
