Games 10 and 11 End in Draw!
Tiger leads match 4-3 in wins.
The 10th and 11th game of the Frank J. Byrne Memorial Computer Chess Challenge
pitting the world's best freely available commercial computer chess program -
Chess Tiger v14 by Christophe Theron against the world's best freely available
non-commercial computer chess program - Crafty v18.15 by Robert Hyatt, ended in
draws today. The draws were the 3rd and 4th draws of the match. The match had
been delayed by technical difficulties that are hopefully behind us. The
modified Crafty now playing is slightly different than the one played in Games
1-9. While fixing a bug, I also made some other changes. This version appears
to be very promising in some “test” games it played in speed chess.
Match Summary:
Tiger v14.0 CP 0 0 .5 1 1 1 .5 0 1 .5 .5 = 6
Crafty 18.15* 1 1 .5 0 0 0 .5 1 0 .5 .5 = 5
*Slightly different modified Crafty started playing after game 9.
The opening of the 10th game was the Queen Gambit Declined - Slav variation.
Both sides played evenly with no player able to advantage of the position.
Crafty won a meaningless pawn at the end of the game, but by that time the game
was drawn.
The 11th game (English variation) was played very tight with neither player able
to extract an advantage out of the opening. By move move 32 the game had taken
a drawish appearance. Both games went over 100 moves before the draws were
agreed.
Crafty won games 1, 2 and 8 of the match. Tiger roared to victories in games
4, 5, 6 and 9. Tiger leads Crafty 4-3 in wins. Games 3 and 7 also ended in
draws.
Like the days of yore, it is the first program to win 10 games and the program
must have a margin of victory of 2 games. A winning score could be 10-8 or
21-19 it all depends on how the games go. Draws do not count - it just wins
that count.
The match is being held just outside of Philadelphia. Game 12 is underway.
Next update tommorrow night.
