Probably anybody looking for strong software already knows the characters.

For anybody else 5 to 10 minutes of study should be sufficient. It's no
different than learning to recognize the international chess pieces. I'll bet
that beginners confuse the king and queen pieces in international chess. Some of
the Xiangqi pieces are constrained in their movements, so they are especially
easy. For instance I doubt that anybody has trouble with the general and the
advisors.

A big plus is that you don't have to remember where the white corner of the
board goes ;-)
