There is not a lot of money in chess programming, or even game programming generally, except for a handful of people who are very, very good at it, and who are hooked up with a company that has a good market position. In my day job, I work on very complex Java-based software. A single copy costs more than 10,000 copies of Chessmaster. I make a good salary and have received highly valuable stock options. I love chess programming, but if I were to do it for a living, I'd likely never make more than a tiny fraction of what I've earned working in other areas of software.
