Maybe speed it not really necessary.  There are many chess fanatics who love
correspondence chess.  Speed is not important there, unless measured in days
rather than minutes.

A "chess engine" consisting of software distributed over thousands of computers
all over the world, perhaps could play really strong correspondence chess!
