My bet is that the first devices running PalmOS 5 will be available late in
August.

That means they will be on the shelves in September, as planned and announced
since a long time. They are on schedule.

Current devices cannot run PalmOS 5 because they are based on the Motorola 68000
processor (a DragonBall with a 68K core).

Only the upcoming devices based on an ARM-core processor will be able to run
PalmOS 5.

The specs of what? The OS or the devices?

Very little is known about the devices because they will probably be released in
two months.

The main things to know about the new devices:

1) they will have ARM processors (the same or more advanced as in the PocketPC).
2) these processors will be MUCH faster than the ones in the current Palms. At
equal MHz they are already significantly faster than the current devices, and
the MHz is going to be much higher (typically 200 to 400MHz this year instead of
33MHz for current Palms). A rough estimate of the speed of the new devices is 10
times faster than the current Palms (depends on several factors, naturally, so
it might be between 5x and 25x depending on the application).
3) the screen resolution will be better than current Palms. Current PalmOS
devices have 160x160. New PalmOS devices are likely to have 320x320 in standard.
4) They are expected to last much longer than equivalent PocketPC devices. The
first tests done by Motorola showed twice the battery life of PocketPC.
5) most existing applications will run on the new devices (thanks to a tiny and
fast emulator built in the OS). That means that they already have thousands of
applications to run.
6) they will have multimedia features, but that will depend on the
manufacturers. I bet that MP3 and video will be very common on these devices.
