Mystery solved.  I explicitly set my PATH environment variable to point to the
Comet executable directory and xboard works like a champ, i.e. "xboard -fcp
cometxb -fd /usr/local/chess/cometB46"  (I had previously renamed the Comet
executable and directory to remove the "-" thinking that may have had something
to do with it.)  Sorry for the confusion I may have generated but I can give it
a whirl now.
