In 1998 NetBSD replaced Rhapsody, which was based on NextSTEP based on the Mach
3.0.
In 1999 OSX server 1.0 branched to Darwin.
In 1999 Mac OSX got a hefty dose of FreeBSD 3.2 which latter got merged into
Darwin ...

It’s difficult to remember all of the details ... it just keeps on working. :-)
