I always remember hearing how a 500 MHz alpha processor >would beat the 1GHz Pentiums or Athlons. I didn't follow the speed development for quite some time, but back then (ie 1 year ago) one could say the following: A G3/500MHz was approx of the same speed as a P3/650MHz. A G4/500MHz was approx of the same speed as a P3/700MHz. That was at least approx true for TSCP. :) Of course tests with special software (like image processing, optimized for a special target platform) could move that to either direction... What I meant to say was that if you're interested in war speed, then the Mac is definitely _not_ a good choice at the moment. While a Mac can easily compete with a PC of same MHz (or slightly above) it's clear that with the current _big_ difference in MHz, the PC is clearly faster for almost anything. But _for me_ this is not an issue since my chess engine is so incredibly weak - even a speed factor of 10 doesn't help a lot. :) Sargon
