I am not part of the CM team but I will try to answer your questions.

John Merlino works on the Chessmaster GUI since Chessmaster 7000 (I am not sure
though). Johan is the author of the "engine" Chessmaster, aka. "The King".
So you may call them a team.

Chessmaster is always a good endgames player, and without doubt one of the
strongest program out there. But I believe the target of the Chessmaster team is
not to make the strongest program in the world, but to give a complete chess
system that will please the customers that will enjoy playing with. In that
effect Chessbase is mainly directed to serious players. Chessmaster is good
enough to beat 99.99% players of the world (so is most strong programs).

Chessmaster is not perhaps as strong as Fritz7, CT 14, Junior7 & Hiarcs8 but its
not very far behind either.
