IMHO, I think this particular ruling is going to start up all kinds of junk between the programmers, with everyone involed having a bad taste in their mouths when all is said and done. For instance, some openings have been known about for years and years, so a particular line of play can be expected to be seen in an opening book. OTOH, let's say that programmer A adds a new variation to a line, and programmer B does the same thing. Programmer A might be able to say that programmer B stole this particular line out of his or her book. With things like this in mind, I believe that this particular ruling is really gray area, and I believe it's going to cause a big, unessesary stink in the championship. As a matter of fact, I'll step out on a limb here and say that this particular ruling has the possiblity of really messing up the championship to a point were the organizers might even try to force all participants in future championships to use the same book! IMHO, this is a MAJOR mistake, and this ruling will cause a tremendous amount of bad feelings between people that wasn't there before. What a shame, and no wonder why people aren't discussing chess programing inovations in public any more. Randall to say that >The rule is not taylor-made for commercial companies. It has been designed in >the spirit of respecting the copyrights on opening books. > >For the first time the programmeurs have a say on the rules way before the event >starts. That's a significant progress.
