Composed problems may or may not be useful as tests for engines (I'm not a chess programmer so wouldn't know), but I think their real interest is whether or not they are asthetically pleasing, interesting and challenging to _human_ chess problem solvers. After all, composing pleasing chess problems is a high art with competitions, prizes, etc., and if a program were capable of doing this well (in traditional terms), it would be another step forward in the attempts to build computer programs that simulate human creativity and intelligence.
