Both of these programs aren't exactly very good for teaching. (But what about
Chessmaster?) They have no tutorials or something like that whatsoever.

They're almost identical, but

a) Fritz 7 has the Kure book which is an excellent openings reference
b) Shredder 6 comes with another interface (Shredder Classic) on disk
