So in a nutshell, you chose a poor cooling method and to make matters worse,
overclocked the cpu. I am not surprised you are displeased.

I have an XP1900 running at 1.76GHz (@ 1.95 volt), air-cooled with a
Thermalright SK6. Runs solid summer or winter. This is a $39.99 fan. A
Celeron 1.3GHz would be lightyears behind this processor for chess applications.

It's been a known fact since the K5's that AMD's run hot. If you choose an
efficient cooling method, this is not a problem -- especially if you don't
overclock.
