Your reply and information was very helpful. Thank you! With the benefit of your
advice, I believe that I now understand it -- which is a major hurdle for me as
a beginner with chess databases! Now I must write it down below, so I'll have a
record, and can refer to it in future if necessary.

With Chessbase Light...

(1) In a games list for a database, when I press the statistics button (a little
barchart icon in the horizontal toolbar at the bottom), it brings up a little
popup window titled Statistics. In that popup Statistics window, there are radio
buttons to select either Game Information or Piece Probability, and enter a
player's name. If I select Game Information, enter a player's name, then click
OK, it gives statistics for that player's games from the list. But if I leave
the player's name blank, it gives statistics for all of the games in that list.
It's dubbed "Elo-%" on the button which appears at the bottom of the statistics
window titled "Clpboard". So the list for the statistics is transferred to the
Clpboard in the process (apparently). This appears to be the main method of
getting statistics in Chessbase Light. It shows (in an example list containing
55 games):

Total games: 55
1-0 21 games = 46% total: 57%
½-½ 10 games = 21%
0-1 15 = 33% total: 43%

That's exactly what I was looking for!

(2) Or if I goto a position on the chessboard in a game, select "Search board
position" (Shift-F7) from the Game menu, that generates a list of games with
that position. Then the above operation as in (1) works to generate statistics
for the position. I just have to be sure to leave the player's name blank.

(3) Or if I select Search Games (Alt-M) from the Database menu and choose
various criteria for a search (a "filter"), that generates a list of games
meeting the selected criteria. Then, once again the method in (1) above gives
the desired statistics for that list.

Again, I appreciate your kind help. Problem solved! I presume that I can
probably do the same sort of thing in Scid, now that I know how it's supposed to
work. That's the problem with us beginners, we really have no idea how things
are supposed to work -- until after we see it work once...
