This way the engine at least tries to promote them instead of moving its king around and don't make any progress, although it has one rook more than the opponent. You'd be surprised how many games your engine can win on chess servers w/o knowing anything about pawn structure. :) [humans make _a lot_ of tactical mistakes - most of them are just 2 ply searches :)] I think you can easily get around 2100 w/ a half-decent search and PSQ-tables and "2 12" as time control.
