What you said is the key about how to becomes a better than just "strong" club
player. I have thought once and again in that, that is to say, how to develope a
kind of personal heuristic to say to one self, "look, Fernando, you should look
for mate right now" or at least "there is a comb. to win a pawn". Theoretically
is not that difficult: you always can say -and it is absolutely truth- that any
kind of comb. supposes some kind of lack of equilibrium in the oponent position,
but then the point is: which kind? My rule of thumbs is very simple: too many
pieces in one sector of the board, too few in the other. Or even: too many
pieces for a too narrowed room. And then I say to myself: "you play and win".
And I imagine I am looking at a book of problems.
Nevertheless, anyway, in the heat of a real game, you tend to forget even that
so a simpleton advice.
My best
fernando
