I think the point of 1.Ba5 is to play c4 NEXT, when it is even more effective.

Here are some possibilities:

1.Ba5!

   [1.c4 Nxb4 2.Qxb4 Nf6
      (2...Kb8 3.Re7 a5 4.Qe1 Qc8 5.h3 Nf6 6.Qe5+ Ka7 7.Qd4+ Kb8 8.Qd6+ Ka7
       9.c5 Rd8 10.Qb6+ Kb8 11.Rxb7+ Qxb7 12.Qxd8+ +-)
    3.Re7 Qc6 4.Rxf7
       (4.Bf5+ Kb8 5.Rd6 a5 6.Qb6 Qxb6 7.Rxb6 Ra7 8.Rxf7 +=)
    4...a5
       (4...Kb8 5.Rxg7 Rd8 6.Bf1 Rxd1+ 7.Kxd1 Qf3+ 8.Be2 Qh1+ 9.Kc2 +-)
    5.Qc3 Re8
       (5...Qe6 6.Rxg7 Re8 7.Bg6 Rf8 8.Qd4 Kb8 9.Bf5! Qxf5 10.Qd6+ Ka7
        11.Rxb7+ Kxb7 12.Qe7+ +-)
    6.Bg6 Qc5
       (6...Kb8 7.Rxg7 Re2 8.Rd8+ Bc8 9.Bf5 +-)
    7.Rxf6
       (7.Qd3 Rg8 8.Bh7 Rh8 9.Rxg7 Kb8 10.Bg6 Ra6 =)
    7...Re2 8.b4 axb4 9.Qd3 Kb8 10.Qxe2 gxf6 +=]

1...Kb8

   [1...Bc6 2.c4 Ndf6 3.h3 Bf3 4.Bf5 Qxf5 5.Re7 +-]

   [1...h5 2.c4 Nc7 3.Qb4 Ne6 4.Bf5 Qc6 5.Rd6 +-]

2.c4! Nde3 3.Rxe3 Nxe3 4.Qxe3 Re8 5.Be4 Qc8 6.Qb6 Ra7 7.Bb4 Ka8 8.Bc5 Qb8 9.Rd7
