I don't think SCID is best because it is free, I think it is the best in spite
of being free.  Shane has done a wonderful job with this program and it has many
features that the commercial programs offer.  And it reads compressed pgn files.
 I have an approximate 300M pgn file compressed with gzip (on Linux) and
uncompressed, it is about 1.5G.  SCID takes about 9 minutes to load it but then
it rips.  SCID is just an excellent chess database management system.
