I'm well aware of the time and efforts it takes to create and maintain websites. I have created and maintained multiple busy websites at the same time in the past. I'm sure a lot of people appreciate Frank's work and what he has done for the chess community. Someday I hope that I can help out in some significant way like he apparently did. For now I'm working on my own chess engine, and continuing to learn more and more about chess programming. Hopefully in the future once I get all of the "basics" completed in my own engine I will be able to contribute something. A website, open source engine for learning different techniques, who knows. My problem is this. Frank obviously knows how much work goes into his website. I don't know if Frank pays for his web hosting or not, but CCC costs someone a lot of money to maintain. The bandwidth along is probably more than any of us would dream to pay, and there's additional computing resources and man hours that have to be put in. If Frank is as active (or was as active) as you claim (and I have no reason to doubt you), then he should know as well as anyone that it's hard work to keep something as popular as CCC up and running. He is allowed to use it for free, and to communicate with the best and brightest minds in the world of computer chess. It's almost like if you had a math problem you were doing for school homework and you were able to consult with a team of leading mathematicians from the world's best universities. What we have here is very special and I hope very badly that we never lose it. I think it's highly insensitive to complain about recieving a single email for what you recieve in return from CCC, especially considering he did it in a public forum, and didn't take the time to find out that there is a way to request that you not recieve emails. I have no personal problems with Frank or you or anyone else here. I'm not anti-Frank. I'm simply pro-CCC. I realize how special this thing is that we have here, and how fortunate we all are to have such a special thing for no cost to any of us. I don't want the people in charge of CCC to become burnt out by complaints. If people complain enough, someone higher up will realize that they could save thousands of dollars by cutting off CCC from their budget. I don't want that to happen. I'm trying to defend CCC. My intention is not to attack anyone or run anyone off. Frank apologized for the manner in which he handled the complaint, so we should all put it behind us and get along. Russell
