An example of AMD's better CPU: At the United Devices website, I crunch moleucular data to see which configuration of molecules might best "fit" with a protein involved in the growth of cancer. A single work unit from UD requires several hours to complete, and UD rates your processor capability and assigns it points based upon the time it takes your machine to complete the work unit. My AMD 1900 at 1.6Ghz (not overclocked in any way) is rated by UD at 161. HotelCalifornia has a brand new 533FSB P4 at 2.26Ghz, and also crunch's data on his computer for United Devices. His processor is rated by UD at 151. This is independent of other ratings factors: memory, disk size, speed of your connection to the net, etc. YMMV however, because all chess programs are different. The best thing, of course is to see how the program(s) you like run on the beastie your considering. David
