I guess the main thing that I dislike about the whole thing is that it's titled
a "world championship", which implies that the winner is (in theory) the best in
the world. When I think of the best in the world, I don't think of a simple
alpha-beta program with piece-square table evaluation running on a giant super
computer that dominates the field. Now consider an advanced program like Diep
running on that hardware. Maybe there should be the "open hardware" world
champion and the "equal hardware" world champion. I would like that much better,
because then we could differentiate between the "best engine" and the "person
with the most money" (or person backed by someone with the most money).
