Computers can sacrifice material for positional compensation.

One example is that my chess program chose 2...e5 when it analyzed the position
after 1.e4 h5 2.Be2 and did not try to protect h5 by g6 or h4 or d5.


Programs also may choose another sacrifice in that position(shredder5.32 chose
Nc6):
