I bought ChessBase 8 about a year ago and use it almost daily. The alternatives seem to be Chess Assistant or SCID (which is free and worth having a look at just because of that). The main reason I bought it, apart from it's features, is that it was stocked at the main London chess shops (so I could just pop down the road and buy one!), that the .cbh format is very popular on the internet and I have copies of Fritz, Hiarcs and Nimzo. I have a few annoyances with CB8, like ECO opening names don't fully appear in certain fields, and some people have found fault with other small details which I'm not sure if they have been resolved. I think the email/correspondence feature is dire and not up to the ease of use of something like ECTool. My CB8 runs on my XP system. Now and again it to freezes for between 10-20 seconds but if you wait awhile it continues as usual. It hasn't crashed on me yet - perhaps I've been lucky. However, despite these problems which you might never notice, or can work around, it's a nice bit of kit, although on the slightly expensive side. (N.B. You get a database and player picture library with it!) Hope this helps Matthew
