Since Chessmaster 9000 will have endgame databases, the Chessmaster personality (and all of the GM personalities) will "instantly" know that Bc7 is a Mate in 15 moves. Setting both personalities to Chessmaster, the following game is played out in just a few seconds: [Event ""] [Site ""] [Date "2002.7.7"] [Round ""] [White "Chessmaster"] [Black "Chessmaster"] [TimeControl "600"] [Result "1-0"] [Setup "1"] [FEN "8/4k3/8/2N5/4KB2/8/8/8 w - - 0 1"] 1.Bc7 Ke8 2.Ke5 Kf7 3.Bd8 Kg8 4.Nb7 Kf7 5.Nd6+ Kg6 6.Be7 Kh7 7.Kf5 Kh6 8.Ne8 Kh5 9.Ng7+ Kh6 10.Kf6 Kh7 11.Nf5 Kg8 12.Kg6 Kh8 13.Bd6 Kg8 14.Nh6+ Kh8 15.Be5# 1-0 However, in analysis mode, the Chessmaster engine does not see a mate on my PIII-600 in less than five minutes (although it would play Bc7). But this does not necessarily mean that the engine does not know how to play this position; it just may not see the full mating sequence. So I checked through the above move list in analysis mode and Chessmaster would play the first three moves as White, but it has a difficult time finding 4.Nb7. But, it DOES see that 4.Ke6 leads to a Mate in 13 (one move longer than 4.Nb7) after 49 seconds. So you COULD say that The King would be able to accomplish mate in this position. As a side note, have you noticed the drills in the Advanced section of the Chessmaster 8000 classroom? There are many difficult drills there, including mating with KBN vs K. jm
