For every factor of 2.5, Crafty gets 1 ply, so Bob used the log base 2.5 to give how many factors of 2.5 there are in the 1000 times speed advantage that Deep Blue has. 2.5^7.5 ~ 1000 so log base 2.5 of 1000 ~ 7.5 - Dan
